it is not like we - the kids of the 50s or 60s - were totally in the dark when it came to sex. yes, generally, most parents would not talk about this topic openly, and many still do not, but we were sometimes treated to mating performances in the open, right at the village square. we may not have formal sex education but we had opportunities to watch formal sex acts in the raw.
first, the male would sniff the rear of the female. when the female was ready, she would lift her tail to the side and strut her legs. the male then proceeded to mount the female. most seemed to lack practice as it would normally take several attempts before penetration occurred.
when penetration took place, the female would sometimes howl. then after a while, it would appear that the two dogs were locked tightly together. the male would then turn around and the two would end up facing the opposite directions. they did not remain still on the spot but tended to move around as a pair. sometimes they would pull in opposite directions but the thing would not be dislodged.
they would remain locked in this state for quite a while. that was when the sadistic nature of man would kick in. maybe, man could not understand why they could be engaged for more than half an hour or so. some onlookers would make attempts to break up the union by beating the dogs with sticks, throwing stones at them or pouring water (i don't know if it was hot water) over their bodies.
these days, such displays are indeed rare because there are no more strays running around the neighbourhood.

very accurate observation. I too wonder why they use normal temperature water to separate the dogs. It does work because all of a sudden the male's organ contracts when it was not possible earlier.
For old ladies or spinsters when they encounter such activities, they consider it as disgusting and would use a handkerchief (if they carried one) to cover their eyes and walk briskly away from the scene.
For me I kept both male and female dogs in my houses and when after they mated I got puppies of cross-bred. Funny thing which I have yet to find the answer. Did you know the pup when they grow into adult dogs, they can even mate with their mother (dog I mean)? There is no complications such as genetic defects.
How come you go straight to the sex part and forgot to mention that during mating season there were lots of fighting. Many a times, our dogs got injured from the fights.
peter, my friend's two dogs (poodles) had an incestuous relationship and the product of the union was a normal healthy puppy.
chun see, yes, i remember those noisy and fierce fights among the dogs over a bitch that was in heat.
One time I saw in a Catholic church in the midst of a Sunday sermon, two dogs decide to "make it out". Because of the intensity, the dogs wandered into the main aisle. The congregation could decide whether to be shocked or laughed because the sermon topic was on morality and if you follow the Catholic faith closely, the use of birth control methods were not encouraged. All the women folks decided the best thing to do was to look in front or bow their heads.
During the 60s and the 70s the sight of male and female dogs mating was a common occurence especially in the kampongs. The onlookers especially the mischievous boys would pelt them with stones while the dogs were still locked tightly together. Due to embarrassment the women would turn the other way or walk away.

These amorous activities also happened in the 1960s in the city area where I lived. Yes, there were stray dogs in the city streets too.
At last, I am not the only blogger Chun See knows who blogs about sex.
victor, chun see is actually quite open about the topic on the internet. he asked me why i dispensed with preliminaries and went straight to the sex part.
