how do you interpret this sign?

this afternoon, i travelled to one of the suburbs in melbourne and, as i came to the end of a path, i spotted this unusual sign. it is unusual because i do not think that such a sign exists in singapore.

what do you think is the message behind (or below) this sign?

could it be...

a fork in the road?

paths merging ahead?

divided lane ahead?

watch out for tree roots!?

no, i did not make any 'noise' to cause one of the letters to drop off. i picked up this 'noise' thing from icemoon's blog but i still do not know what it is. i am sure you know the letter which has dropped off. or could it have been physically removed by someone?
