malay riddle
picture from national archives of singapore
if you are a true blue kampong-boy, who has lived in a kampong where there were malays, you would most probably have heard of this malay riddle:
buka sarung, nampak bulu
buka bulu, nampak biji
buka biji, nampak batang
remove sarong, see hair
part the hair, see seed(s)
remove the seed(s), see the rod
most kampong boys, especially those who lived in a kampong with a racial mix, would know what was being referred to. i wonder if today's generation of children can get the correct picture.
for answer, see below.....

Ada sedikit kesilapan. Perkataan pertama di kalimat dua dan tiga dalam pantun awak harusnya "buka" bukan "buku" lah. "Buku" adalah untuk dibaca sambil "buka" adalah lawannya makna dengan "tutup".
wow! i didn't know my learned friend is so well schooled in bahasa melayu. seems like sarong can be spelt both ways. 'buku', genuine typo error. i didn't realise until you pointed it out.
To enjoy jagung, some people love the biji together with the batang, when it is steamed. Others like just the biji, as it is less messy.
mr nah, the 'batang' can be eaten, meh?
YG, the batang, so long as it can be put into the mouth, has to be a great delicacy.
