why are the x'mas lights on the trees?

christmas comes early to bukit panjang? no, this light-up is part of the national day celebrations. the 43rd national day falls on 9 august 2008. more than a month before the actual celebration, the buntings, banners, boards and lights are already up. the lights were switched on 3 days ago.

this is being replicated all over the island.
