beetroot and apple juice

of late, i have taken to drinking beetroot and apple juice. to make the juice, i use two medium sized beetroot and 5 apples. you may also add two small carrots to the other two fruits to make it the abc juice... a for apple, b for beetroot and c for carrot.

first, i will wash the beetroot and the apples. for the beetroot, i use the peeler to remove the skin. after removing the skin, i will cut the beetroot into small pieces. in the case of the apples, i will first cut it into four parts, remove the core and further slice it into smaller pieces to fit into the juicer.

the maroon colour of the beetroot appears to over-ride all the other colours - the green colour of the apple and the orange of the carrot. the colour even overpowers the colour of your liquid and solid waste.

drinking beetroot juice is believed to be a simple way to maintain a healthy cardiovascular system. it can drastically reduce high blood pressure. what's more, its nutritious juice is renowned for being a great liver cleanser. it is often advisable to use just a small amount of this "powerful tonic" mixed with other vegetable or fruit juices so as not to push the body into detoxifying too quickly.

beetroot is also believed to regenerate the cells of the immune system, build and purify the blood and improve the circulation. it is ideal for alkalizing the system through its rich sources of caroteniods, flavanoids, betacyanin, folate, silica, vitamins and other essential minerals for the human body.

the fruit juice should be consumed fresh and neat, without adding any ice cubes to it. the 2 beetroot and 5 apples are sufficient to provide two small glasses of juice.

Beetroot is one of those vegetables that has the power to elicit strong reactions. Either you love it or you hate it. My wife and I are in the group that loves beetroot. We often do an Indian dish Shorvedar Chukander (apologies if my spelling is incorrect) with it. I use pressure cooked beetroots, about five medium sized ones cut into 1/4 to 3/8 inch dice and add to a pan in which I have fried an onion brown add a teaspoon of cumin seeds, a teaspoon of ground cumin and a half teaspoon of methi powder. Add in a tin of chopped tomatoes and simmer for twenty minutes. You can eat it by itself like a thick stew or serve it on a bed of rice or eat with chapatis. Lovely grub.

Thanks for the tip. I will give it a try. Never tried beetroot before. Every weekend, we drink carrot juice. Sometime I add a tomato - heard that the lycopene is good to guys our age.

chun see, someone i know had kidney stones which gave him excruciating pain. i think some small stone got lodged in the urethra. he was scheduled to go for an operation. his sister advised him to try drinking beetroot and apple juice. after two intakes of the concoction, he was relieved of the pain and when he went back to his doctor, he was told there was no need for an operation.
this is not an advertisement for beetroot/apple juice.

I was told that beetroot is good for rheumatism. Also that green apples are good for kidney stones. Uncooked beetroot however has a funny flavour that I don't like so need a stronger fruit to overpower it. i like it cooked in Russian borsht soup though.

I have been taking this drink before breakfast since last year. I was told not to eat any food for an hour after taking the drink.

I used to prepare abc at home and gave up after a few tries cos the cleaning is rather taxing. So few years ago I went to the corner shop at Smith Street and South Bridge Road for the fix. Cheap and easy. But I am not sure if the shop is still a juice shop, not been there for quite a while.

hi simPerBlog, for the sake of your own health, a little mess and cleaning up should not be a deterrent.

hi kimology, beetroot mixed with apples produce a pleasantly sweet drink. by itself beetroot has the taste of raw vegetable.

mr chew, do you take the juice every day?
