before the hdb made its presence here

this is one part of s'pore which holds fond memories for a number of bloggers. today, like almost everywhere else in singapore, most of the buildings and structures you see in the two photos have been replaced by hdb blocks of flats. the types of cars you see in the first photo will give you some clues to its location.

i am sure peter and chun see will have no problem identifying this place. cityboy victor may have been to this place when he was a schoolboy. some of the stalls that you see in the first photo may have been relocated to the shops in this area.

1 where is this place?

2 in which year (decade) was this photo taken?

My guess is Changi village in the early 60s. The second photo looks like the street that went down to the market past the Wayang. With the coffee shop on the corner there was a pawn shop next to it, in that same block was the air conditioned Milk Bar and Tong Sing Restaurant.

The first pic looks like Changi Village.

Even if Victor does not recognize the place, he can answer both questions correctly. Because yg is careless ....

Yes, even some names (properties), though inconspicuous, can give certain clues to those who think they know but are not 100% sure.

Yes, it's Changi (likely Changi Village) for both photos and they were taken in February 1969. BTW, I didn't Google this info hor.

phil, victor knows how to exploit the internet to get to the bottom of things; like icemoon said i had been careless. besides, goggling, he is also good at digging..into people's picture folders.

changi village. The last photo has the SHELL Station which is now the public carpark before turning into the SBS Bus termuinus.

The attap shops are on the opposite side; the hotel side today.
